For the 2025 JIAS Writing Fellowship, applications are now being accepted. Participants in this fully funded three-month residency program will remain in Johannesburg, South Africa. The University of Johannesburg’s Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) is in charge of organizing this fellowship. There is no application fee required of applicants. “Global Blackness” is the theme for the 2025 JIAS Writing Fellowship Program.
The Fellowship investigates the various Blackness-related experiences, ideologies, and intellectual traditions in various situations and geographical areas. JIAS Writing Fellowship: Why?

Qualifications
- Candidates ought to be PhD holders.
- A proven track record of research or creativity (publications, projects, exhibitions)
- Candidates from the Global South will be given preference.

- Letter of motivation: In no more than 250 words, describe why Johannesburg and JIAS are appropriate for your research project.
- Outline of a research project: Provide a synopsis, abstract, screenplay, artist’s statement, or project overview (no more than 1000 words) that describes your writing or creative endeavor.
